Test for steroids

Take 2 ml of the extract was added to 0.5 ml acetic anhydride and add 0.5 ml of chloroform
and 1ml conc. H2SO4 slowly. Formation of red colour indicates the presence of steroids

               (Khandelwal, 2009)
               Test for terpenoids

Take 2 ml of the extract was added to 0.5 ml acetic anhydride and add 0.5 ml of chloroform
and 1ml conc. H2SO4 slowly. Formation of violet colour indicates the presence of terpenoids

               (Siddiqui & Ali, 1997).

                Test for tannins
Take 2 ml of the extract was added to 1ml H2SO4 and 2 drops of ferric chloride solution.

Formation of blue or greenish black indicates the presence of tannins (Iyengar, 1995).

               Test for glycosides
Take 2 ml of the extract was added with glacial acetic acid and add few drops of FeCl2

solution. Then add 1 ml of conc. H2SO4 slowly on sides. Formation of reddish brown or
bluish green precipitate indicates the presence of glycosides (Siddiqui & Ali, 1997).

               Test for reducing sugars
Take 2 ml of the extract was added to 1 ml of distilled water and add 5-8 drops of Fehling’s

solution. Formation of brick red precipitate indicates the presence of reducing sugar

               (Khandelwal,2009).
               Test for proteins

Take 2 ml of the extract was added with 4% NaOH and add few drops of 1% CuSO4 solution
was added. Formation of violet colour appears indicates the presence of protein (Khandalwal,

               2009).

               RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The Alternanthera sessilis showed better results in phytochemical screening analysis.

The phytochemical analysis of Alternanthera sessilis in different solvents were studied and
the results. The maximum number of compounds (9) were present in benzene and diethyl

ether extracts. In benzene extracts the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins,

tannins, glycosides, oxalic acid, malic acid and sulphate were present. The diethyl ether
extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, tannins, glycosides.

The moderate number of compounds (7) were noticed in aqueous and ethyl acetate. In
aqueous extracts alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, steroids, glycosides and proteins

were reported. The ethyl acetate extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, saponins,
tannins. The ethanol extract hiconfirmed six phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids,
